What you'll learn in this digital photography class:

The Fundamentals classes are, by far, the most popular starting point for photography classes in Chicago and are designed to give the complete beginner a solid understanding of their digital camera and the fundamental knowledge needed to embark upon a lifetime's exploration of photography.

There are no 'hidden' or extra fees to pay for any classes at the Academy. There is no Lab fee. All of the supplies needed for printing are supplied by the Academy. There is no required lens to buy. In fact, the fee covers everything you need for the class.

The 'Digital in a Day' class has much of the same fundamentals of photography information but does not cover the information in as much depth. If you prefer to learn how to take great photographs without having to 'fiddle' with them on a computer, this class will work for you.

Required Materials:
  • Digital SLR Camera (DSLR)
  • Camera User Guide (if you have one)
  • Lens
  • Memory card
  • Fully charged battery
  • Notebook and pen
The Academy will supply all other necessary equipment and materials at no extra charge.

  • White Balance
  • Metering Mode
  • Autofocus

Question from Kelley O.
I am interested in this class and have a few questions. 1)This class says it’s 1 day but then says “ In addition to the above topics, the Four Week Digital classes cover the following subjects”. Can you please clarify? 2)I see a camera is required. I was hoping to take the class and then decide on the camera. Is there any advice around a decent beginner camera? 3)If my friend does this with me (we would both enroll) - can we share one camera that we bring during the workshop?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Kelley! There are 2 separate classes. One class is for one day and the other is for four weeks. A camera is required. They recommend a Canon T6i ( with a 50mm lens ( They have had people sharing a camera in class before. It has never been a problem.
Question from Eric H.
Is this class conducive to those using mirrorless cameras as well? And is the location in south loop or Lakeview?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Eric! All of the classes now run in the South Loop and mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses are perfectly fine for the class.
Question from Mitch M.
Is there parking available for this?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there, yes, there are plenty of metered parking spaces nearby. There is also free street parking on Wellington.

Carlos is great and always made sure everyone understood the current content before moving forward. I would hope to have Carlos again in future courses I plan to take.

The class was amazing but directions into the building were difficult. I learned so much and highly recommended this class.

I thought it was a great introduction, and felt like I learned a lot, but, as Carlos predicted, I am now overwhelmed and asking, "Wut??" Reviewed my notes and took my camera out yesterday to review his lunchtime assignment, and am feeling really stupid. Remind me again why we were playing with changing the shutter speed (so long as it was above 1/60 to match the lens length) when we were in AV.
