Discovery Green is a vibrant, 12-acre public park in the heart of downtown Houston, located at 1500 McKinney Street at Avenida de las Americas, directly across from the George R. Brown Convention Center. Opened in 2008, the park was developed to bring green space, cultural programming, and a welcoming civic gathering place to the east side of downtown. It has become one of Houston's most beloved urban destinations.
The park's photographic offerings are exceptional. Kinder Lake draws rowers, kayakers, and reflections of downtown's skyline. A field of fountains provides dynamic water photography opportunities, doubling as an ice rink during the winter months. Food and drink vendors, live performances on the outdoor stage, and a steady flow of families, couples, and visitors throughout the week all offer compelling subjects for environmental portraiture and documentary photography. Unlike much of downtown Houston, which can be quiet on weekends, Discovery Green buzzes with activity and visual energy every single day.
Getting here is straightforward. Closest to I-59, the park is easily accessible from all major freeways. Paid parking is available underground and on surrounding streets. Metro Light Rail passengers on the Red Line should disembark at the McKinney stop and walk east. Two bus stops are located directly in front of the Convention Center, with additional stops nearby. The class meets at the White Promenade bridge over Kinder Lake, near the Lake House.
Each Composition in the Field class opens with a briefing from an experienced DPA instructor, followed by a guided walk through one of more than 20 photogenic locations across our network of cities. You'll encounter opportunities for street photography, dramatic interiors, farmers' markets, zoo subjects, landscapes, and much more. Sample images are drawn from both student and instructor work at venues throughout the United States and Canada.
You'll have a great time during the three-hour session, develop a more deliberate and strategic approach to shooting, and leave with practical skills that improve every photograph you make, from travel to family celebrations to everyday creative work.
Please note that if a class must be canceled due to weather or circumstances beyond our control, we will be happy to work with you to reschedule.
