Begin your pottery journey when you meet your instructor during your first class, who will introduce you to studio procedures and have you working with clay right away. You'll receive 12.5 pounds of clay as your starting material, with the option to purchase additional clay as your projects require.
Course structure and techniques:
- Session 1: Introduction and pinch pot fundamentals for basic hand-building skills
- Session 2: Coiling techniques to construct larger forms and sculptural works
- Session 3: Slab roller, extruder, molds, and "cookie" basics for structured pieces
- Session 4: Glazing techniques to complete and finish your creations
During the first session, you'll focus on centering and creating simple forms like cylinders using the wheel. The second session teaches you to trim pieces from session one while throwing additional work. In the third session, you'll develop advanced throwing and trimming skills. Important: this is your last opportunity to throw new pieces, as anything started after this point will not be fired.
Your fourth session covers glazing your bisque-fired work, with all pieces expected to be ready for glazing at that time.
Participant requirements: You must be 18 or older to enroll. Participants aged 14 to 17 may attend if accompanied by an adult who is an active class member or student.
Important preparation notes:
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to class start time
- Wear casual, comfortable clothes and shoes that you don't mind soiling. Standard clay washes from fabric easily, though certain glazes and materials may be more resistant to cleaning
- Bring an apron and towel if you own them for additional protection
- Trim your fingernails short, as long nails significantly impede wheel throwing and clay shaping, preventing you from working with ease and confidence
- Remove all jewelry, including rings, watches, and bracelets, which present obstacles when handling clay
- Secure long hair with an elastic or tie away from your face and neck, as this is critical for preventing accidents with the wheel
