John Weiss

Teaches at Los Angeles Center of Photography

John (JJ) Weiss for many years professor of art and director of photography at the University of Delaware, now leads travel photography workshops across the globe. He has led seven safaris to Kenya and Tanzania.  He has also guided groups to Peru, Cuba, Ireland, Italy, and Spain. In all, a total of 32. John’s a Los Angeles newbie, having moved from Delaware a few months ago.

John's book, The Face of Baseball, was featured in both LIFE magazine and on NBC-TV's Today show.  John is also author of Venus, Jupiter & Mars, an authoritative monograph on the photographer, Frederick Sommer. He is currently at work on two new books, Portraits of People Who Never Were, digitally enhanced close-up portraits of people in Ireland, and The Maasai of the Mara Rianta, photographs and legends of Africa. 
Widely published in the U.S. and Europe, Johns’ work is in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris).  His most recent exhibition was at the Centre for Creative Photography in Adelaide, Australia.  An inspiring and gifted teacher, John received his university’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and is also the recipient of the 2006 Teacher of the Year award from the Santa Fe Center for Photography.  His website is currently being revised.
