What you'll learn in this enamel class:

This class takes an experimental approach to working with enamel on copper. Besides learning the basics of applying enamel to metal and proper firing, students in this course will explore the use of liquid enamels, glass beads, underglazes and lusters to create unique effects and surfaces. Other techniques include scraffito, stoning, rubber stamps and stencils. Students will create several sample pieces and choose one to develop into a finished piece of jewelry.

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?
A: 
Yes. Students who are absent for class are allowed to make up missed class time during open studio hours at no cost. This is an unsupervised working time. Teachers are not required to meet with students outside of class to make up missed information. Students may make up missed hours up to 2 weeks after their class ends. One missed class equals 3 hours.

Q: Is there anything else I should be aware of to be prepared for class?

A: Yes. The school requires closed toe shoes and appropriate work clothing made from natural fibers. Long hair must be tied back when working in the studio. They provide safety glasses but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them.

A: Supply list includes:

Basic Materials

  • 40 or 60 mesh 2” enamel sifter (Thompson catalogue.. SM-3-40 or SM-3-60) 
  • 200 mesh 2” sifter (Thompson catalogue.. SM-3-200) 
  • 100 mesh 2” enamel sifter (Thompson catalogue.. SM-3-100) 
  • Thompson enamels: assorted medium temp/medium expansion enamels for copper, silver, and gold. 
    • Bring along whatever you might already have. 
  • 2-3 2oz. jars of opaque Thompson Enamels 
  • 1 2oz jar of light transparent Thompson Enamel such as copper green, lime, russet. No reds or pinks. 
  • 2020 Thompson Enamel clear for silver 
  • 1997 Thompson Enamel opaque black 
  • 1050 or 1006 Thompson Enamel white 
  • Dust mask 
  • small brushes for painting with underglazes 
  • 1/2” brush for applying liquid enamel 
  • 2-3 small plastic containers for water (like yogurt containers) 
  • small plastic or ceramic palette for underglazes and oxides 
  • Alundum stone

Metal Supply

  • 22 ga copper sheet, 6x6” to begin

Refund Policy
Withdrawals from class 7 days prior to the start of the class will receive a full refund for the class minus a 10% processing fee. If cancellation occurs 3-6 days prior to the class, we will provide a 50% refund. Cancellations 48 hours or less receive a 25% refund. Refunds will not be provided for no-shows or same-day cancellations.

We do not refund tuition for classes that students miss due to their own circumstances. Students enrolled in multi-session studio courses (excluding workshops and intensives) may make-up missed class sessions during open studio hours for up to two weeks after the last class meeting.

We reserve the right to cancel or discontinue any class, in which case you may choose to receive a refund, apply the class credit towards a different course, or receive a tuition credit for future use. Tuition credits are valid for up to one year. Refunds will be issued within 30 days.
