Meets 8 Times
In the spirit of Joachim Schmid’s call for “no new photographs until the old ones have been used up!”, this six-week course will explore various methods of reusing and transforming existing photographic imagery.
Through a mixture of lectures, readings, and group discussions, the course will trace the history of photographic appropriation throughout the 20th century, look at numerous contemporary artists and photobook makers working with found photographs, and discover parallels in the world of literary appropriation.
Participants will work with online photo archives and their own sourced material in a series of creative exercises and group critiques. Ideal for those looking to build coherent bodies of work from found photographs or incorporate archival materials into their practice, this course is intended to give participants a broader view of how existing photographs can be recast in new ways.
Students will leave with constructive feedback on in-progress projects and new insights into how to approach this type of work.
A minimum of three students is required for all courses to run. In most cases, our registration deadline is 24 hrs prior to the start time of a workshop/class.
This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.
Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.
Please provide us with as much advance notice as possible for consideration. Beyond this, we cannot be held responsible for any cancellations outside of our control.
Unless otherwise stated, classes need a minimum of three students to run. In the off chance that a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be refunded 100% of your tuition. Tuition costs for cancelled workshops can also be transferred to other classes or workshops.
We are not responsible for any non-refundable travel costs (such as airfare, train tickets or accommodation costs). If you are traveling long distances or from out of state, we advise you to consider purchasing travel insurance as workshops may be cancelled or postponed due to low registration or other unforeseen circumstances.
Due to the intensive nature of our workshops, we cannot offer makeup sessions outside of workshop time or in future workshops. Instructors are not required to bring students up to date during scheduled workshop time for missed days or lateness.
Refunds will not be given for absences or no shows. *This includes any illness or absence related to Covid 19.
In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
