Description
Class Level: All levels
Age Requirements: 18 and older
Average Class Size: 6
Teacher: Sam Dole

What you'll learn in this photography class:

In your post-workshop practice of the wet plate collodion process at home, it is perfectly common to have problems fine-tuning your workflow to get the results you want. Troubleshooting in the darkroom can be a frustrating endeavor when on your own if some time has passed since your last shooting session.

In this multi-part online course, Sam Dole will guide you through troubleshooting at every step of the process, drawing upon over ten years of practice in the wet plate collodion process.

Topics will include:

  • Darkroom and studio setup, plate preparation (including glass cleaning, coating and sensitizing).
  • Proper exposure assessment, developing/fixing/washing technique and varnishing.
  • With an emphasis on repeatable results and plate cleanliness, students will be equally equipped with the knowledge as to where certain "process artifacts" originate and how to optimally produce them as desired.
  • Participants will have ample opportunity to show examples of their work and ask questions about troubleshooting specific problems they are encountering.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy
In the event a student must cancel their registration for a workshop, they may do so any time before and up to 14 days prior to the workshop, and will receive a 100% refund of workshop cost plus any material fees. In the event a student must cancel attendance from a workshop after the registration deadline (14 days prior to the start of the workshop), this will be considered a withdrawal. The workshop costs and materials fees are not refundable but a 20% discount will be given toward another workshop.

There are situations that arise in which a workshop may need to be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notified as soon as possible. Students are entitled to a full refund for the workshop cost and materials fee up to one week prior to workshop. A credit can also be given in the amount paid for the class to use at a later date. Penumbra is not responsible for any non-refundable travel costs (such as airfare, train tickets or accommodation costs). We would advise you to consider purchasing travel insurance.

Due to the intensive nature of our workshops, we cannot offer makeup sessions outside of workshop time or in future workshops. Instructors are not required to bring students up to date during scheduled workshop time for missed days or lateness. Refunds will not be given for absences or no shows.
