Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this pottery wheel class:

Learn classic wheel throwing techniques used to make teapots, vases, coffee mugs, and practically any functional and sculptural works you can can imagine in a supportive, friendly environment.

This "trial" class is a hands-on intensive wheel class taught by the school's expert instructors.

Q&A

Q: Can I take what I make home?
A: No, students are not able to keep their pieces. Since the process is much wetter and wheel throwing requires a secondary step, called trimming, to keep the pieces from cracking, we can't accommodate that for our Intro classes.

As an introduction class, it was pretty good. A lot of other people in class. Instructor was good, but very soft- spoken. Was difficult to hear her ( music interfered- was eventually lowered and then turned off) and difficult to visually see her instruction from the other side of table. Some of us moved closer. We managed to get the idea and she was moving around helping us. A pre- taped video on a big screen might have worked better with our size class- but I think we all got it in the end- some more than others. It was fun! Would recommend it!

Question from Sharon M.
Do they still offer the option to keep your piece for an extra charge?
Answer from Peggy C. Verified Educator
The option to keep a piece is only offered for Intro hand-building workshops. The technique taught for hand building involves slabs which are drier and sturdier so it's possible to fire these pieces. The Intro wheel workshops show students centering and throwing a basic form on the potter's wheel. This produces a very wet piece. In wheel throwing there is a second step before firing called trimming. It is not possible to trim the same day that a piece is made as the pieces are too wet and weak.
