What you'll learn in this furniture class:

In this one day class you will become familiar with the iconic Kanawa joint. It is a standard scarf joint in the Japanese tradition and a great addition to your bag of tricks!

The day will be spent going over the layout and cutting of this advanced joint. A few variations will be covered and enough time set aside for you to have a go at cutting your first one!

Prerequisite needed for this class:
  • Sharpening with Japanese Waterstone
  • Japanese Joinery – Mortises & Tenons
Recommended:
Japanese Block Plane and Chisel or Japanese Finish Planing

Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class?
No.
A payment of $20 is required as materials fee at time of class.

Materials you will need to bring to class:
  • 210mm ryoba saw 
  • 6mm(1/4″), 12mm(1/2″) and 24mm(1″) chisel 
  • block plane and or finish plane 
  • hammer, square, pencil, eraser.
Optional:
  • dozuki saw, 
  • 12mm paring chisel 
  • marking gauge
  • sashigane (Japanese square)
A list of additional useful tools for the class will be provided to interested students.

Students can purchase tools and materials at the school as Mokuchi is a Japanese tool retailer and can provide guidance on obtaining tools and a student discount.
