What you'll learn in this kids life skills class:

Earth Living Skills are skills we practice to give one confidence that we can survive on Earth using materials we find in nature.  With practice we can become comfortable knowing what we need to survive can be gleaned from the landscape no matter where we live.

A person can be resourceful and can solve problems once they know the basics of survival:

  • Awareness: We will practice awareness through games that use all of our senses, and questions and stories that foster connection to the natural world and help develop passion and curiosity.
  • Shelter: we will build shelters out of natural materials we find in the forest.
  • Water: we will learn how to find, collect and purify water.
  • Fire: We will explore different methods of making fire, including flint and steel and friction fire with bow-drill kits and more.
  • Food: We will search and identify wild edible, medicinal and utilitarian plants and cook and make medicine and useful items with them. We will learn basic hunting principals, such as stalking and tracking and make basic hunting tools.

The flow of each class would look something like this:

  • Begin with a circle where we would share what we are feeling grateful for in nature.  To quote a student in a recent afterschool class:  "The secret to happiness is gratitude".
  • Play some games to create excitement and enthusiasm and to wake up the senses.
  • Do a hands on project that involves one the 4 basic elements of survival listed above; shelter, water, fire, food.
  • Reflect on the day's activity in a circle.

Please note: this class may involve 1 - 2 sessions at McCarren Park which is also along the L line. Parents will be responsible for traveling there for drop off and pick up OR allowing Nancye to travel with their children via subway.
