This 3 session course will introduce you to Honeybees and Beekeeping. Learn the basics about honeybees, beehives and equipment to become a beekeeper or review your beekeeping knowledge. Course is appropriate whether or not you wish to keep hives of your own.
Session 1 - Through the lens of a year in the life of a beekeeper, learn about the life cycle of honeybees. What are the chores a beekeeper performs throughout the year to maintain the hive and insure hive health. We will discuss the honeybee's role in the environment, threats to honeybees survival and what we can do to help the honeybees survive.
Session 2 - Hive and Beekeeper equipment and supplies. A review of the equipment and tools necessary for the beekeeper, beehives, honey extraction and bottling and bee and hive products. Hands on activities included.
Date TBD - Session 3 - Outdoor hive inspections. Date to be determined based on weather and student availability. Students must have their own beekeeper suit, veil and gloves.
