Teacher: Mitch Waxman

What you'll learn in this historical class:

Join Newtown Creek Alliance Historian Mitch Waxman for an intense exploration of Newtown Creek's Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn.

A colonial center and 19th century industrial powerhouse, Greenpoint is a thriving neighborhood surrounded by an environmental catastrophe which has been reborn in the 21st century. The walk will explore this ancient North Brooklyn neighborhood and its industrial history as we move inexorably toward the Newtown Creek. The area we will be moving through will be completely altered by real estate development in coming years, come take a look before everything changes.

Bring your camera, as the tour will be revealing an incredible landscape along this section of the troubled Newtown Creek Watershed.

Be prepared for rough terrain and possible heavy truck traffic. Dress and pack appropriately for hiking and hot weather. Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Bathroom opportunities will be found only at the start of the walk.

Meet-up: In front of St Anthony's Church on Manhattan Avenue at Milton Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Drivers, park your vehicle nearby the Pulaski Bridge.

Refund Policy
If you're looking for a refund or class credit, you need to back out of the class a full week before it starts. (No exceptions!) We know it's draconian, but since we aren't charging an arm and a leg and have to buy all our materials in advance, it's kinda hard to deal with last-minute bailings.

We also can't transfer registrations to a future session of the class. Sorry!

Instead of dropping out if you have a schedule conflict, a better idea is to ask around and see if any of your friends want the spot. We can't give you a refund less than a week out, even if there's a wait list for the class.

Regarding bad weather, we generally only cancel classes if the subway system stops running. If traveling during snowstorms might be an issue for you, please take this into account before registering for a class.
