Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this voice over class:

Voiceovers: Audiobook narration is a dynamic, intensely creative career that grows more viable every day as the demand for books, podcasts and audio plays booms. Is your voice right, will listeners love you as their guide? Eric Yves Garcia’s audiobook narration class is the ideal and accessible jumping off point: finding genres that will suit a new narrator, honing distinct voices and pacing, keeping up vocal strength. Best of all, you’ll have an insider's glimpse at the preparations, the pitfalls and the flat-out fun of vocally building a listener’s world.

In Eric's interactive, three-hour long class you will work in a small group setting, and will get an overview of what the modern audiobook industry looks like. Through prepared texts of the student’s choosing, you'll be given an opportunity to read in front of the coach. This is the best way for him to get to know you, any technical adjustments to be made, but above all the quality of your voice and characters!

We limit the number of participants in our Voiceover/Audiobook Narration classes, making sure that everyone their fair share of direct attention and the opportunity to read copy for our instructor.

Looking for an escape, looking to bring people along? Narrators might not write the books, but from tales around the fire to radio dramas, from audiobooks to audio plays, we are storytellers too.

Materials Needed to Participate Fully:

  • 2 extracts from books you love: 1 non-fiction, 1 fiction with some dialogue from more than character (if possible, of different ages/genders). Each sample should be approximately a page, a page and a half, no more than two. Please then send me scans of your selections so I can follow along as you read in class. Your selections should be prepared and very familiar to you (NOT memorized obviously) prior to the class. Reading off whatever surface is comfortable for you (page/screen) is perfectly fine.

About the Instructor:

Eric has been an Audible narrator since 2013 and voiced several mysteries, sci-fi, YA, romance, non-fiction such as history and memoir. His roles in multicast audio plays range from kids to classics, including Little Women starring Laura Dern, recognized by Entertainment Weekly.

Virtual Class FAQ

What will be included in my Virtual Class package?

One ticket includes an access link to your live, online class. The class will be delivered via web conferencing software and feature a live, professional instructor who will walk you through a lesson as described above. You will have the opportunity to ask questions as well as participate from home.

How many people is my purchase good for?

Each ticket is good for one "device" (i.e. one computer, phone, tablet, etc. you'll be logging in from). This ensures we don't get more people in the class than the instructor can handle. Though we understand some people live together and will be working/learning together, the intent is that each class still allows for the same attention to attendees as if students purchased separately. Please be respectful of this!

Will I need anything from home to use in the class?

You will need a reliable Internet connection as well as a computer or device with which you can access your virtual class. We recommend you arrive to class 5-10 minutes early to ensure you're able to set up your device and connection. Additionally, if the class is more than just a lecture you will likely want any materials listed in the course description as "Materials Needed to Participate Fully", though you're welcome to purchase a seat and sit in and just watch.

Am I able to ask questions or interact with the class?

Yes, you'll both be able to ask questions using the chat function in the video hosting software as well as at certain intervals during the class via voice/audio. If the class winds up being on the smaller side, more spontaneous interaction/questions will be encouraged.

Do I have to show my video or speak during class?

While we recommend you do show your video and speak when encouraged to by the instructor, video and audio participation are never mandatory. We find classes have more fun experiences when people are engaging with one another, but understand not everyone will want to do so and that's ok!

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

  • Cancellations made at least 2 business days in advance of the class will be honored with a refund less 5% cancellation fee.
  • Students who cancel less than 2 business days prior to the start time of the class will receive a credit towards a future class.
In the event that an instructor or the school needs to cancel at the last minute, students will receive a refund less a 5% non-refundable registration fee.

Eric Yves Garcia's class offers two helpful angles for people thinking about working in audiobook narration. First, he shares a detailed overview on working in the industry and the end-to-end process of getting and finishing a job, including mid-pandemic. Second, he gives on-the-spot notes and direction to students who read selections they have prepared for the class. The chance to re-read after feedback is truly useful, and the techniques suggested to individuals are useful for all of the students in the class. An enjoyable and professional session!
