Mon, Oct 07, 7:15pm - Dec 16, 9:05pm (11 sessions)
The decade of the 1920’s was a period of dazzling creativity in Europe and America.
“New” was the thing in music, literature, painting, poetry. Artists of all disciplines intermingled and influenced each other. Young composers and musicians took center stage: Les Six in Paris; Gershwin, Copland and Armstrong in America; Weill, Brecht and Hindemith in Berlin; Berg in Vienna, experimentalists such as Varese and Antheill; yet all came under the influence of the two dominant figures of the age, Stravinsky or Schoenberg. It was a period when highbrow and lowbrow collided, when “isms” competed for dominance: Neo-Classicism, Futurism, Surrealism, Da-daism, Nationalism, Serialism, and when the modernist aesthetic attitudes that prevailed throughout the 20th century were established.
We will explore all of this and more, with one special aspect of this course being the occasional use of excerpts from a lecture series on this era that Aaron Copland made for Public Television in 1965. Copland was there right in the middle of it all, and his insights are particularly illuminating.
