Having introduced ourselves to Jazz in the 1950’s over the course of our recent summer semester, we’ll take a deep dive into the decade, meeting many emerging artists of this moment—Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane as solo artist, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, George Russell—while continuing to follow the remarkable work being done by iconic artists such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Thelonious Monk, Count Basie, Bill Evans, and more.
All is explored in the historical context of the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, and a still thriving 52nd Street. Jazz in the Nightclub. Jazz as High Art. This is Jazz in the 1950’s, Part 2.
