  • Machine Sewing

Reviewed by Stewart N. on 3/25/2024
I was an electronics engineer and in my retirement I learned 3D-printing, laser cutting, advanced woodworking and more at a makerspace. But the makerspace didn't have sewing and I didn't know how to shorten pants or even use a sewing machine to stitch a top loop on the stretchy green-screen fabric I use for my ZOOM session backgrounds. I also want to change a flannel shirt or two that I have with tuck-in tails to flat-bottomed so I don't have to tuck them inside my pants. I have no desire to make clothes from scratch. I now feel confident I can sew what I wanted to sew with what I learned in this course and some online research. The course had a relaxed friendly atmosphere and instructor Diana Rogers roamed the room giving each student considerable individual attention. After the first class, my wife and I finally ditched our 20-plus-year-old sewing machine that was giving her trouble, and purchased a new Singer sewing machine for less than $200 that is similar to the Singers we used in class. I highly recommend this course.

I worked with Mary and she was a perfect match. I showed up over prepared with my machine and variations of fabric. She jumped right in and provided me with all of the base knowledge I need to jump into sewing including stitching techniques, fabrications, along with the ins and outs of my particular machine. There wasn’t a single question that was left unanswered and she was genuinely down to earth. The two hours flew by and I honestly wish I could rewind that whole day because we worked very well together. I’m so happy I chose this!!

The one on one class with Ingvild was so amazing. I really had a great time learning how to create this tote. Ingvild has such amazing energy and answered all of my questions. She really loves what she does and it shines through in all aspects of her teaching. I would love to go back and take another class with her and I would recommend this class to everyone!

Discover the Best Fashion Classes in NYC

Do you live in New York City, and are you always scouting for the latest trends? Are you someone who buys new clothing as the seasons change, looking for that perfect piece that will stand out on social media? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you already have an idea of what fashion is. This global industry centers around anticipating what consumers will wear and how they want to present themselves to others. Fashion is generally defined as a type of self-expression and autonomy that allows a person to try on many roles in life. Just like your style can change with the seasons, anyone can change and learn the art of fashion.

Why You Should Learn Fashion in NYC

Learning fashion in New York City can potentially be a way to mitigate some stress you feel from work or school. It also gives you something productive to do during your free time, which you might spend studying trends, visiting stores, or coming up with content ideas to post on social media. And when you learn the art of fashion, you can spread your gift to others by creating outfits that they will love.

Once you understand the basics of fashion, you will realize that there is a global community that loves fashion, both as a hobby and in a professional sense. You might want to research local clubs, groups, events, and organizations where you can meet others that are interested in fashion. Just bear in mind that these groups are generally for social purposes, and not so people who are more experienced with fashion can teach a beginner.

Lastly, if you learn how to make outfits that are visually appealing, you could easily take that one step further and start a side hustle where you dress customers for a fee. This is a marketable skill that you could easily put on your resume. And if your love of fashion translates into getting crafty, a little time with a needle and thread could lead to you making your own customized clothing pieces that you could sell online or in-person.

Virtual Fashion Classes & Schools

Don’t want to take an in-person fashion class in New York City? While taking an online fashion class might seem daunting at first, this unique way to learn has its pros and cons just like any other type of learning. You can attend a virtual fashion class from anywhere, which means you can work on your fashion project in the comfort of your own home, at the beach, or even in a coffee shop…wherever you want. You also do not have to commute to a classroom, which saves both money and time. The biggest con about taking an online fashion class is that you generally have to supply your own materials and equipment.

For example, How to Start Your Fashion Company: Design Your Line is a live online course offered by M SHOP. This all levels class offers you firsthand expertise on how to set up your fashion business and will show you how to go from an idea in your mind to physical designs in your hands.
