What you'll learn in this business writing class:

In business, your writing counts. It’s a projection of yourself (and your company) just as much as what you wear or how you conduct yourself in a meeting. Good writing skills will enhance your image, increase your confidence, boost your productivity, and help you achieve your objectives on a daily basis.

Here you will learn the basic principles of good business writing, which you can immediately put into action—on anything from simple emails to complex documents. You’ll also be surprised at how entertaining the course is, and by how much “personality” can play a part in your business writing.

Topics include: customizing messages for your voice and the intended audience, tone, structure, process, writing clear/concise/specific.

Whether you seek to pick up the basics or polish your skills, you’ll soon be writing with less stress and more success.

Prerequisite: Students must speak and write English fluently.

Refund Policy
All Classes (except One-days and Write-Ins)
For a refund or credit, contact us two business days or more before your class starts. You can either choose to hold a full credit with us good for one year on other Gotham classes OR you can opt for a refund less a $25 administrative fee and your $25 registration fee ($50 total).

If you need to withdraw after your class has started (or one business day before it starts), you won’t receive a refund, but you’re welcome to a Gotham credit less the price of Week 1 and your $25 registration fee, but we need to hear from you two business days or more before Week 2 meets for that to happen. After that point, no credits are available.

One-day Intensives
You may reschedule a One-day Intensive one time, if you notify us before the class begins.

If you notify us two business days or more before your class begins, rescheduling is free. If you notify us less than two business days before your class begins, there is a $25 rescheduling fee. If you don’t notify us until after your class begins, we cannot reschedule you.

You may get a refund (minus a $50 fee) if you notify us two business days or more before your class begins.

Write-Ins
If you withdraw two hours or more before it begins, you’re welcome to a full credit good for one year toward another Write-In. No refunds are available. If you simply don’t show up and don’t notify us in advance, you forfeit your money.

A few more things
Credits are valid for one year and cannot be changed into refunds down the road.Simply not attending class or notifying the instructor does not mean you've officially withdrawn. Some exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for medical emergencies with a doctor's note.Refunds take up to six weeks to process.

Please understand, we can't issue a refund after classes have started, even if you miss your first class. Similarly, we can't offer you a credit one day before your second class or after that. We understand that other obligations get in the way of attending class, but these policies allow us to get other interested writers into class early enough to have a good experience, and this allows us to offer our classes at a reasonable price.

Question from Judy S.
Do we do much writing in the class? And if so is it critiqued? How basic is the course? Is it geared towards English as a second language? Will it help my grammar, simplifying thoughts, and writing persuasively?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The students do a few writing exercises each class. About 20-30 minutes per session. The in-class writing assignments are not critiqued but students are encouraged to share their work (if they’d like to). Each week there will be a homework assignment and those are turned into the instructor. The class is not geared towards ESL but there is often a student or two who are fluent in English but it’s not their first language.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The class covers grammar very in one session but if the student is looking for a grammar class this is not the one for the student. The Business Writing class will definitely help with simplifying thoughts and writing persuasively.

I did not like how the professor would read to us the notes and examples rather than us having a copy of the notes she was using or a visual presentation from a monitor.

Great class! Lots of real world examples and good practice exercises discussed in class. Class size was around 12 people, so it was fairly intimate.

What a great and helpful class! Alex Steele made the class fun as well as informative, giving constructive criticism as an opportunity to improve. I appreciated being able to put the material into practical use during the class. It was also very nice to meet Cosmo.

Versatile information and engaging material. I do feel the class could have been condensed to a half day course but definitely beneficial to all types of business writing professions.
