Michele LiCalsi

Teaches at National Academy School of Fine Arts

LiCalsi graduated from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. She has enjoyed a longstanding career as an artist, art conservator, and teacher. She has been a conservator of frescoes in the Parma Cathedral, Italy, of archaeological objects in Sardis, Turkey, of eighteenth-century stucco reliefs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and of objects from the Culin and Egyptian collections of The Brooklyn Museum. LiCalsi has studied fine art and has taught courses in drawing and painting (including fresco and egg tempera) with an emphasis on expression through color and composition. She is an artist working in the figurative tradition with a specialty in portraiture. Her training as an artist, art historian, and art conservator lends a broad range of knowledge and experience to her studio courses and museum lectures on the technology of paintings.

This class is great if you just love drawing- the instructor takes a very free form approach- every week there is a different set of items, you draw and she walks around critiquing and offering suggestions. I personally wanted a more structured class where we learned techniques - this was not that class. For others it may be great, but I left disappointed.

Not only did I learn a lot in a short period of time, it was very laid-back and therefore a great way to unwind after work. I really liked the personalization the instructor gave and the way she taught. I plan to take this class again in the fall to continue working with her.
