Sasha Kolomatsky

Teaches at The Art Studio NY

Born and bred in the suburbs of Manhattan, Sasha is a New York City award-winning artist and art educator. Sasha has always been encouraged to emote through a creative outlet by her parents; a playwright and a fine artist. Growing up with the motto “there are no mistakes in art,” and an affinity towards the multidisciplinary blend of high and low art of Japan, Sasha has a strong belief that art has no boundaries and allows this to flow into her everyday life.

Sasha’s patience and focus have allowed her to succeed in her artistic practice as long as she can remember, and by age 15, her technical drawing skills were well established. As a teen, she was accepted into the pre-college program at Cooper Union thrice, exposing her to the alternative thinkers of the art world, art history, performance art and printmaking for the first time. Those forming moments led to her eventual BFA from Smith College, with a focus in printmaking and painting.

During her time at Smith, Sasha was surrounded by activists and intellectuals who heavily impacted her art as well. Her contemplation of life and death, world cultures and overlooked ancient arts inspired her to create award-winning pieces for the Elizabeth Killian Roberts Prize for drawing, the Megan Hart Jones Award, and a proposal for the Praxis Grant, where she was a visiting teaching artist of ceramics at the Montclair Art Museum.

Three months before graduating from university, Sasha fell ill. A life changing point in her life, she had a temporary delay in speech and thought. The only things that got her through were her friends, family, and art; where she released her emotions through the cathartic process of printmaking. Instances like this, when emoting through creatively physical acts that had a positive physical outcome, made her realize how important and therapeutic art practices are. This life changing experience sparked a need in Sasha to share not only her art, but her practice through art education as well.

In addition to teaching children and teens at the Montclair Art Museum, she has also lead a Reduction Linocut and Acrylic Painting class for PI Art Center, an institution for international young adults ages 14-30 looking to build their portfolios for University. At her time at the Brant Foundation, she was an integral part of the educational outreach program. She currently teaches step-by-step Zoom painting parties to young children and multidisciplinary arts to individuals who are interested in applying for prestigious art schools.

Currently, Sasha primarily works in oil, pastels, paints and ink, as well as on reduction linocuts using various gauging tools and a small print press. When she’s not in her makeshift art studio, you can find her on her computer using Adobe suite or her iPad using Procreate. Her work has been exhibited at the Janotta and Oresman galleries at Smith College.

Sasha has pursued traveling and worked hard to learn more about non-western art, fulfilling a lifelong dream of hers to travel to Japan solo. Taking advantage of her exposure to other cultures as an American in New York City, she uses art as language and promotes others to do so in return, resulting in a never-ending exchange of learning through visual art.
