Cynthia Alberto

Cynthia Alberto is an artist and teacher. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in New York City, she studied textile surface design with a specialization in weaving. Her personal work as a weaver and fiber artist is to bridge traditional and contemporary forms of weaving, working with conventional materials as well as wires, hairs and other materials. Cynthia is also a backstrap weaver and works with Mayan Guatemalan weavers in Guatemala, Indonesian weavers in Flores Island and New York. Collective Communal Consciousness is the central tenet of her practice. Collective Communal Consciousness, founded in 2008 by Cynthia, is an art movement that brings the community together by spreading the message of Art Therapy through healing. She also founded Cynthia founded Weaving Hand in 2007. A Brooklyn based studio, Weaving Hand  celebrates, embraces and promotes the sustainability of global hand weaving traditions.  The studio facilitates weaving as a creative tool to enhance developmental growth of children and adults with intellectual, emotional and physical disabilities.

Cynthia has exhibited her work around the world, and was the recipient of the Dan River Weaving Award, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Peters Valley Craft Center Art Educator Scholarship, Museum of Arts and Design - Open Studio Residency.  She is a resident artist at League Artist Natural Design (landgallery.org) in DUMBO, Brooklyn NY a studio and gallery that feature work of adult artists living with disabilities.
