Ryan Joseph

Ryan Joseph was born in Trinidad, West Indies and now resides in Jersey City, NJ. He is a freelance documentary filmmaker and photographer. He co-produced and co-wrote The Rink, a feature length documentary about a local roller skating rink in Newark, New Jersey. He also co-produced, wrote, and co-directed It took 50 Years: France Goldin and the struggle for Cooper Sq., a documentary about a legendary housing activist and her community that fought Robert Moses and the City of New York for affordable housing in the Lower East Side. He is a faculty member at Rutgers Center For Digital Filmmaking at Mason Gross School of the Arts. He has taught filmmaking at Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey and photography at Borough of Manhattan Community college in New York. His documentary films and photo essays focus predominately on subcultures and marginalized communities. He is a recipient of several awards and grants, and his works has been shown at Aljira, Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, New Jersey, John Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland. He has been published in The New York Times and Jet Magazine. He earned an MFA in Integrated Media Arts in from Hunter College in New York City.
