John Smock

Teaches at Newmark Graduate School of Journalism

John Smock is a photojournalist based in New York City. He has worked for the Associated Press and SIPA Press, a photo agency with offices in New York and in Paris. His images have appeared in many publications including The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, Paris Match, and Der Spiegel. Smock is currently working as an instructor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. He also teaches a workshop on writing for photographers at the International Center of Photography. Previously he worked as a photojournalism and multimedia trainer in several former Soviet Republics, Cambodia and Afghanistan. In 2005 Smock was awarded a Knight International Press Fellowship to the Middle East, where he assisted regional journalists and editors in developing visual components for their publications. Prior to becoming a photographer, Smock worked as a reporter, an editor and as a consultant for New York Today, the predecessor for The New York Times Online. He received his M.S. degree in journalism from Columbia University.
