Nancy Smith

Teaches at Brooklyn Institute for Social Research

Nancy Smith is a faculty member of Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and Assistant Professor at the School of Information at Pratt Institute, where she teaches in the Information Experience Design Program.

Her primary research is focused on understanding the relationship between digital technologies and the environment, which includes work in sustainability, animal-computer interaction, and speculative design.

 Her dissertation explored robotic bees and the implications of integrating artificial intelligence into ecological systems. She is part of Inclusive Ecologies, a research group that explores the connections between design and climate crisis.

She received her PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Indiana University. She also has an MA in Media Studies from the New School, an MFA in Creative Writing from University of San Francisco, and a BA in Philosophy from Seattle University. She is currently working on a book about animals and technology.
