Liberty Station is a fascinating and visually rich environment with deep historical roots. Established in 1923 as a naval training center, the site expanded dramatically during the Second World War before eventually being transferred to the City of San Diego. Today, Liberty Station has been thoughtfully reimagined as a dynamic hub for commerce, history, and the arts, and it has become one of the most rewarding outdoor locations in the region for photography.
The Spanish Colonial Revival architecture throughout the complex offers photographers an extraordinary range of subjects: detailed ornamental facades, graceful arched doorways, patterned decorative tiles, and textured stucco surfaces. Practice composition techniques such as leading lines, symmetry, and architectural framing as you explore these elements. The site's symmetrical layouts and repeating geometric shapes create natural opportunities for balanced, eye-catching compositions.
Seek out reflective surfaces as well. Fountains and polished floors add a second layer of visual interest to any frame. Fountains are particularly versatile subjects: use a fast shutter speed to freeze water droplets sharply in place, or slow the shutter down for a silky, flowing effect.
The spacious courts and plazas at Liberty Station are also bathed in abundant natural light throughout the day, offering the chance to observe how the quality and direction of light shift as the sun moves. Notice the dramatic difference as it passes from behind a cloud back into full exposure. For interior photographs, look for windows as a source of directional natural light that can add warmth and dimension to your images.
Each Composition in the Field class opens with a discussion led by an experienced instructor, followed by a guided walk through one of a wide variety of photogenic locations across the 20-plus cities in the DPA's network. The curriculum encompasses street photography, architectural interiors, farmers' markets, zoos, landscapes, and much more, and the photos included in class materials are a mix of instructor and student work from locations across the United States and Canada.
Over the course of this three-hour session, you will develop a strategic approach to shooting, learn how to capture more compelling photographs of any subject or location, and leave with a practical compositional foundation you can apply to everything from travel photography to everyday moments.
