What you'll learn in this kids camp class:

How does a fish breathe? How do camels regulate water? What do scales have to do with movement? This week campers will learn about fascinating animal adaptations and how they can inspire innovative and sustainable solutions to human challenges. Perhaps we can save the planet by emulating nature’s patterns and strategies.

Sample Projects

Armadillo Backpack

Campers will construct a collapsible backpack inspired by the amazingly adapted armadillo. It will be structured to keep items enclosed, but when not in use it can be a fashionable bandolier or fanny pack.

Campers will learn about armored animals and plants, how their armor can be modified and for what purposes. Campers will see different examples of spines, quills, plates and shells in animals, as well as spines, hairs and plates in plant species.

Gecko Feet

Campers will engineer a series of different “feet” that are adapted to defy gravity. Their feet will then be attached to a robotic gecko who will attempt to climb a wall at various angles.

Campers will learn about the factors to consider when designing their feet, including gravity, friction, mass, force, and angular momentum. Campers will also practice the engineering method as they design and redesign their gecko feet prototypes.

Seed Dispersal Velcro Catch

Campers will learn about some of the fascinating ways that plants have adapted to disperse their seeds, a process which is crucial to understanding the evolutionary origins of life on this planet. Campers will use velcro in different ways to develop a game that is designed after a common mode of seed dispersal– the hitchhiking seed.

Campers will learn how seed dispersal has taken on many different forms. They will also develop their understanding of plants and the adaptations they have gone through in lieu of motility.
