What you'll learn in this kids camp class:

Learn about forensic science and become an EDMO™ detective! In Forensics Lab, campers will learn about investigative techniques and use chemistry, molecular biology and physics to explore mysteries throughout the week. Campers will carry out experiments in ink chromatography, fingerprint analysis, DNA extraction, and more.

They’ll learn how forensic experts use science to discover the hidden clues left behind at crime scenes and how that helps investigators solve difficult cases. Discover the unseen world of chemicals, molecules and genetics in this week of inquiry and exploration!

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Critical Thinking, Flexibility, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Creativity.

Strawberry DNA Extraction
Campers will be using household materials such as borax, dish soap and salt to extract and unravel the DNA from strawberries. This process is one used in laboratories to study genetics.

Campers will learn about DNA and how genetic information is coded by nucleotides. Campers will also learn about the process of DNA extraction and the various applications, both in forensics and beyond.

DIY Fingerprint Powder
Campers will create their own fingerprint powder to dust for fingerprints and look for clues! This fingerprint powder reacts with the oil in our hands to make fingerprints visible to the naked eye.

Campers will learn how investigators and forensic scientists can use fingerprints as evidence. They will also learn some of the ways genetic and environmental factors affect our gene expression and development.

Ink Chromatography
Chromatography helps forensic experts visualize the chemistry of various compounds, including ink. Campers will use the chromatography process to collect clues from a mystery note and identify the specific pen used to write it!

Campers will learn about the process of chromatography and the chemistry of ink. They will also learn how chromatography and spectronomy techniques translate complicated chemistry into visible light and color and their application in forensics and beyond.
