What you'll learn in this kids camp class:

Get your body in motion! In Play Action Science, campers will work together to better understand how their bodies incorporate many sophisticated systems that allow them to be active and play. Campers will investigate the importance of their respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, and muscular systems in addition to testing them in action by designing games and playing them.

Sample Projects

Game Design

Campers will play a series of games involving different strategies, mechanics and materials. Then taking these elements into consideration, they will design their own game based on a theme of their choosing. Campers will work collaboratively or independently to come up with a game that they will later teach the rest of the camp.

Campers will learn about the commonalities of gameplay, as well as some differences. They will learn specific mechanics including hand-eye coordination.

Collaborative Game Play

Campers will explain the rules of their game to others and then play it! Games will go on for three rounds each, with each group getting a turn to explain their own game. Campers will use items like balls, jump ropes, cones, hula hoops, and more.

Campers will build collaboration and creative thinking skills by working together and brainstorming games that they would want to play. They will learn common game themes and decide on what to name their games and what the mechanics will be.

Exercise Experiments

Physical activity requires the cohesion of bodily systems working together to make play possible. In this series of experiments, campers will be put to the test to better their understanding of the muscle, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. These systems work together to allow play action to be possible. For this activity, campers will play a series of games and then measure their heartbeat, breaths per minute, blood pressure, and neural reflex responses.

This lesson breaks down the science behind physiological processes and will help campers understand how their bodies allow them to engage in physical activity. Campers will learn important terminology, as well as how to measure the physical and chemical responses their bodies have to physical activity. They will learn how to use a blood pressure cuff, how to measure heart rate and count the number of breaths per minute, as well as the basic physiological chemistry behind gas exchange and cellular respiration.
