What you'll learn in this kids life skills class:

Things are heating up at Camp EDMO®! Join the conversation and learn about the ever changing state of the earth from a scientific perspective. Campers will investigate how human practices directly and indirectly influence our biosphere and the life that calls it home. Campers will engage in experiments that examine the impact of ocean acidification and deforestation, then delve into the complexities of carbon cycling and photosynthesis to learn first hand some of the ways in which our planet is adapting to the Anthropocene era.

Sample Projects

Ocean Acidification and Photosynthesis

Campers will use indicator dye to test the pH of water that has no CO2, water that contains plants and CO2, and water that contains CO2 but no plants. They will also look at how leaves produce oxygen by taking in CO2 from the air.

Campers will improve their understanding of photosynthesis and the carbon cycle by examining how the presence of chlorophyll molecules allows for light energy to be sequestered and metabolized using CO2 from the atmosphere. This process creates oxygen as a bi-product.

Deforestation

Campers will use plant models to understand how soil and roots maintain the integrity of ecosystems and act as support anchors for new forest growth. This activity looks at different examples of land-use including natural forest, altered forest, farmland, and areas of great infrastructure. Campers will also investigate how each area is affected by different amounts of rainfall.

Campers will learn how plant roots help hold soil in place, which prevents mudslides and runoff. They will discover how mudslides can lead to structural damage and loss of life in rural communities and how runoff into freshwater and marine ecosystems can prevent photosynthesis from occurring in aquatic plants, which creates anoxic areas that cannot sustain life. Campers will also learn how land-use change can cause a loss of biodiversity, which increases susceptibility to disease and reduces natural ecological responses.

Geoengineering

Faced with the complex dilemma that is climate change, campers will work together to solve the climate crisis while taking into account factors that affect different parts of the world. Campers will learn about the effects of climate change on specific locations. Then they will decide on the best method of preventing climate change as a whole and present their findings at our first ever EDMO Climate Council.

Campers will learn potential ways to prevent and mitigate climate change and develop their diplomacy and negotiation skills as they work together to solve one of humanity’s most immediate dilemmas.
