TOEFL Preparation I

This nine-week course focuses on preparing students for the TOEFL exam. Students taking this course will improve their skills in key areas of the TOEFL so that they feel more prepared for the demands of this exam. In this course, students will practice giving descriptions, stating preferences, giving an opinion, improving reading comprehension, taking notes, summarizing main ideas, outlining paragraphs, and writing opinionated texts. They will identify the main ideas in a short lecture and academic conversation and will write an opinionated paragraph.  

Students will have an opportunity to study all four sections of the exam: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They will work with partners and in groups to practice forming responses to questions that are similar to those they will find on the TOEFL exam and will get feedback from their classmates and instructor. This course starts and ends with a practice exam in order for students to see their improvement over the duration of the course. 

Before taking this course, students should be able to speak in paragraph-length discourse in informal and some formal conversations. They should be able to write basic academic paragraphs including descriptions. In addition, students should be able to understand clearly structured texts. 

Course Prerequisites: 
All new and returning students must take a placement test to participate in the program. The test’s time, date and location are included in a payment confirmation email you will receive after enrolling

Textbook Requirements:  

Students should purchase a NEW copy of the textbook at Georgetown’s Campus Store (or other bookseller) before class begins as it will be used for course assignments starting on the first day of class.
