World renowned floral designer Michael Gaffney teaches flower design from the ground up. Learn from the master and you, too, could become a designer. Want an artistic, creative life that adds emotional significance to nearly any experience? Then consider American Floral Design Schools.
Once upon a time, Michael Gaffney worked away in a cubicle on Wall Street. Overworked and uninspired, he didn't really know how unsatisfied he was until one day, on a visit to his Midwest hometown, he stepped into a flower shop
"I realized how much flowers can affect a person. They're part of every stage of life - birth, death, weddings, funerals, memories, romance. And I saw how good designs make a stronger impact. Suddenly, I wanted to be part of that. I saw floral design as a way to help people renew, recover, express sympathy, fall in love, and share friendship. And in doing that, I understood that I could actually make a good living, doing something I love, while adding beauty and flair to events that touch people's lives.
Michael's floral designs have graced a wide spectrum of occasions, from a simple first date bouquet to grand wedding arrangements; from movie sets to haute couture fashion shows, and everything in between.
"I came to see myself as an artist for people's emotions. I made a good living, yes, but my art made other people happy. It was remarkably satisfying. And flowers, of course, grow and bloom, but they don't last forever. They disappear. It's a medium that's both dynamic and ethereal. You're always being called on to create something new, but it won't last either. And that's okay. That's what makes every bouquet, every event special. It's like working every single day with the best things in life - flowers, certainly, together with energy, creativity, reinvention, renewal."

I had so much fun! This was my first class with course horse and I can’t wait to sign up for more!
The teacher is quite a character and he could do with listening to his students more and being a bit more patient but he is clearly very talented.
I have recently completed the Flower Design course with your school and wanted to express my sincere appreciation for your outstanding program. The program was well organized, professional and gave me the hands on experience needed to start work in this career field. The classes were small enough to get one on one feedback on each design. I especially like the hands on experience which developed confidence in each specific style. The instructors were talented floral designers but also patient with beginner students. They were able to give the students just the right mix of encouragement and honest critical assessment for further improvement. I enjoyed the visit to the wholesale floral company. It opened my eyes to another part of the flower industry and enhanced my knowledge of flower identification as well as seasonal design. I would highly recommend your school to anyone who is seriously interested in joining the floral industry.
I hardly know where to begin to express my appreciation. What a singular privilege it has been attending your School of Flower Design and learning from an accomplished master of the art! Thank you for creating such an appealing, welcoming welcoming, ambient sanctuary environment in the learning space you designed. Every session was highlighted with wonderful music, a stunning rich array of colorful, fragrant, beautiful flowers, a complementary variety of lush greenery, and the bonus of many special thoughtful creative touches you so generously lavished upon us (like the exotic lotus leaves and decorative chopsticks, to name just a few). I‰Ûªve no doubt I speak for our entire class when I say everyone much appreciated you sharing your talents with such personable warmth and engaging humor. your knack for candidly ‰ÛÏtelling it like it is‰Û with genuine openness and personal caring and interest was especially refreshing, welcome and beneficial to us all. Thank you for enriching our lives by sharing from your wealth of years of knowledge and experience and business savvy. A breath of fresh air and an exceptional expression of loveliness in today‰Ûªs busy world. Thank you for your motivational encouragement. It has been a blessing, an honor, and pleasure learning from you these past eight weeks. I just have to add this. Honestly, it is a mystery to me if or how you could make any profit by the school, as I was non-stop impressed how you went all-out and spared no expense or detail in supplying the best-of-the-best or your students per the quality of instruction, extraordinary abundance and variety of exquisite flowers, vases, other containers, supplies and accessories provided. Thank you, thank you Michael! It was a completely ‰ÛÏover-the-top‰Û!!!
I want to add to my earlier review below that Michael Gaffney is an expert at the "how to" for anyone interested in learning the basics of Flower Design in a comprehensive yet reasonably priced course. He continues to travel the nation, crafting arrangements and sharing his talents with all of us. We are lucky!!! The professional course at the Los Angeles School of Flower Design promised much, but delivered MORE! The detail they put into the lessons, the modeling of "how to" design, and the insights into crafting stunning arrangements and building a business were all an inspiration. All flowers were included in the cost of the course - and we got to take the arrangements home! Great VALUE for the money!!! In addition to the coursework itself, the school stated that we would also take field trips - which we did. Great hands-on informative sessions at flower markets in both Torrance and Carlsbad. Following graduation from the Los Angeles School of Flower Design, I had the skill and knowledge to open my business Flowers By Sam, and have had the pleasure of assisting and/or representing the school for events at Jo Malone, Barnes and Noble, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and on David Tutera's hit show, My Fair Wedding. Our instructor - and mentor, Michael Gaffney, just published Design Star - a comprehensive book on floral design. Amazing! Michael is a valued teacher and designer - a true inspiration to anyone who works with flowers! I encourage anyone considering taking the design course to enroll TODAY!!!
Informative and entertaining. Good mix of demonstrations, discussion and hands-on practice. Not sure tips work quite as well as advertised.
It was a great and fun class ! I suggest it to everyone
very enjoyable class, however, it was a very large class (approximately 30 students) - smaller size as it was so hands-on would have been preferable. Instructor was personable, knowledgeable, and the class was well planned out, with materials at the ready. It would have been helpful to have been told to bring a bag or bin to take projects home in!
I love it
The class was very good but I was new to floral design and was trying to write down some important facts such as increasing the life of the arrangement. It would be helpful if the instructor had given printed sheets with important info so we can focus on the hands on part.
