What you'll learn in this ceramics class:

Elizabeth Orleans hosts "Ceramic Social" from her Venice Beach art studio via Zoom. Learn how to hand-build things out of clay. Stay creative and socialize from your own home!

When: Every Tuesday Evening 6-9 PM (time is subject to change) We will Zoom for 2 hours (availability/questions for the last hour)

What: We will focus on a project that we do together each week (although I do not mind if people do individual projects)

Techniques you will learn are coils, pinch-pots, slabs

Where: In your garage, back patio, on a fold-out table… (if your work table is wood put down cardboard, plastic and then an old sheet)

What you need: Clay and a rolling pin (or straight wine bottle)

What you should get: Clay Planet Ceramic Social Kit - Includes - One 25 lb. Bag of Clay (BRAVO BUFF) + 5 Tools (Retail price over $40) marked down to $33 + flat rate box shipped within US for $22

What are the 5 tools:

  • Wire tool (for cutting off the amount of clay you want)
  • Fettling Knife (for cutting clay/ not sharp like kitchen knife)
  • Needle tool (for poking a hole/ drawing)
  • Rubber rib (for smoothing things out)
  • Scoring tool (for putting two pieces together)

Those who do not have tools can use household items:

  • dinner knife, paperclip, old credit card

Extra things: colored underglazes if you want color on your work (sold online at Clay Planet, at Blick, etc.) + poster board or paper to make templates, stencils, draw ideas

About Clay

Clay fires to 3 temperatures- low fire, mid range & high fire. We only do low fire. We have always used low fire white clay in class. Clay Planet recommends Bravo Buff because it is very easy to build things with. It is slightly tan or pink when fired and can also be fired in any kiln (including a high temperature gas kiln). There are other clays to choose from as well. They like San Jose white if you want a low fire white colored clay. If you have one class left or can only buy one class and cannot purchase anything we can leave clay for you to pick up.

Cost

$230 for four classes
$65 for one class
$50 if you have access to a kiln (or if you live in another city we will try to research where you can fire)

Cancellation Policy: 24 hour notice or loss of class

Changes because of Zoom: You will now be able to take the class with one other person! Or you can make another 3 hour (not including detail work) project in your spare time

How will I get my work fired: Finished pieces will need to be delivered in a box to Elizabeth Orleans Studio in Venice, CA. They will be dropped off curb side or buzzed in to leave work in hallway. All work will be fired in kiln, glazed with clear glaze, fired a second time and packed in box to be picked up.

I wish there were more instructions or just any instructions quite frankly. I got there knowing absolutely nothing about working with clay and hoping to learn something new. But all I got was just a little chunk of clay and “do what you want” I mean it’s fun if you already know what you’re doing and how to do it (which seemed to be the case for most of the other people there) but if you’re looking to actually learn something then I’d choose another ceramics studio. Oh and also, it does not include 25lbs of clay. I got probably closer to 2 lbs if even that.
