The school began with the idea of a nationwide workshop series dedicated to promoting the culture of digital photography. The workshops would be taught by talented and accredited professional photographers who live in the cities where they teach. The classes would be small, and the students would be grouped according to skill level so that nobody would feel bored or intimidated.
Richard Rabinowitz and his company R2Rainmaker, which has been working with the world's most accomplished photographers for the last 25 years, started by finding talented professional photographers to teach in each city. A long and rigorous selection process led to signing up 48 accomplished shooters from 26 cities around the country. During intensive meetings and many friendly meals, we hashed out the curriculum for each skill level, developed detailed ideas for outdoor shoots involving students in the advanced workshops, and decided on the equipment required to enhance their skills at post-capture image manipulation. We knew that if we wanted to build long-term photo communities, the tips and techniques had to be helpful to people who owned all different cameras, no matter who manufactured them.
On April 23rd, 2007, our instructors from around the country traveled to DPA headquarters to launch the school. During a four hour photo-shoot designed to express our collective joy in digital photography, the instructors captured hundreds of beautiful images of flowers, ponds, waterfalls, and the inimitable inhabitants of the big apple, which comprise much of the photos on the the school homepage. Shortly thereafter, all the instructors return to their cities, and began running classes throughout the country.
All of the DPA instructors have brought their cameras back to their cities, to assist in teaching the DPA workshops hands on. You can bring any make or model of digital camera manufacturer to your workshop, as our instructors have knowledge and experience with all different kinds of cameras.

I was looking for a phone photography course for my fiancé and myself who use Android and iPhone respectively. I couldn't find anything perfect but reached out to Digital Photo Academy and Richard was beyond helpful in finding me a photographer who could help us improve our basic photography skills. He reached out to his team of professionals in the Boston area and matched us with Brian Diescher who couldn't have been better to work with. Brian met us where we were interested in getting started and brought us to some amazing places we wouldn't have thought to photograph. He taught us to take much better photographs so our vacation pictures would be more interesting and a better quality. Brian also accommodated us when the weather on our chosen date was pouring rain and we met the following day. It was a great experience and we will definitely reach out again if we can get ourselves more into true photography. I've already recommended it to friends looking for a good activity or day date idea.

I really enjoyed the class. The instructor, Stephen, was very helpful and gave me good feedback on my portfolio as well as answering practical questions in the field. Would 100% do it again.

Scott is a great instructor. He was very clear and explained everything really well. I am so glad I took his class. So much so I stayed for the next class, on composition. Had a great time and learned so much. I am looking forward to taking more classes at the Digital Photography Academy.

the class was okay, I thought it was going to be a lot more to it. It seems like it ended early, I feel that the instructor didn't know a lot about our cameras.
The questions that we had wasn't answered the way I thought they would be.
Also being at the observatory wasn't a good place to practice our cameras, some of the functions we couldn't really practice because it wasn't a lot of activity there so I think the choice of venue was right.

Jim Caldwell was very knowledgeable and willing to share his expert experience. He provided many basics for we beginners, but also practical tips that even experienced photographers would find useful. Great job and and I thoroughly enjoyed the class.

Steven was highly knowledgeable and personable. As a true beginner I appreciated his patience! I stayed for the Field class that followed the basics class and that was terrific as well.

This class was wonderful! Joe is so knowledgeable, personable, and patient. He got as excited as the students when we sighted potential for an interesting picture. The location provided a multitude of subjects from brightly colored flowers blooming in the sun to the old mechanisms of the drawbridge. A wonderful experience!

Nina was a wonderful teacher! She brought very useful printout reference sheets, taught me about my camera, taught me about Lightroom (which is invaluable and I would have never used it!), and advised me on lighting! I learned a lot in three hours! Thank you so much!

I was the only student in this class. Joe taught and showed me exactly what I wanted to know. He showed me different ways to understand it. Joe was patient, pleasant, and knowledgeable.
