What you'll learn in this abstract painting class:

Learn everything you have wanted to know about going abstract. Discover and practice process, techniques and concepts behind making abstract art. This studio class will help you understand what abstraction is, and how to achieve it in your own work.

Supply list:
  • either acrylic or oil paints (acrylics recommended for beginners) 
  • colors recommended:
    titanium white, ivory or carbone black, buff or  unbleached titanium, naples yellow, cadmium yellow (light, medium dark), cadmium red (light, medium, dark), magenta r, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue,prussian blue, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, raw umber, indian yellow
  • Optional:
    zinc white, mars black, primary yellow, pyrol red, cobalt blue, red oxyde
  • acrylic glazing medium, retarder medium
  • oil mediums: liquin, dammar medium, turpenoid, linseed oil

    recommended brands: 

    oil: Rembrant,Van Gogh,Winsor Gregorian,Old Holland,Gamblin
    acrylic: golden, Utrecht, Liquitex, Winsor & Newton

  • a can of gesso
  • a 2 or 3 inches flat brush
  • sand, saw dust, plaster, cement
  • palette: wet palette (only acrylic)
  • glass palette (good for oil), paper plates (cheap & disposable) 
  • several fabric rags
  • brushes: natural bristles, set of different sizes and shapes-round, flat ,flat-round (avoid synthetic hair they cost more and last much less) sable brushes are very good quality but expensive: a very good investment though 
  • canvas: any sizes can be use, for beginners though it’s better not to start too big. 16”x 20” is a good size to start with 
  • For studies and first steps get a canvas pad: economic and convenient

Refund Policy
Tuition is refundable for Adult and YFA (Youth Fine Arts) classes, minus a processing fee for each class dropped, only if the EAC Registrar is notified by or on the next working day after the first class has met. Workshop fees (minus a processing fee) are refundable up until one week prior to the program. 

If the Director of IT and Administration is notified at least one week prior to the scheduled start date, a processing fee of $50 is charged for dropping adult classes, YFA classes, or workshops costing $100 or more or a $25 processing fee is charged for dropping programs costing under $100. 

A processing fee equal to 50% of the tuition is charged for adult or YFA classes and camps that are dropped during the period from six days before the first class meets and the next working day after the first class has met (workshop fees are not refundable during this period). Please refer to the chart below. 

Students are responsible for notifying the Art Center Director of IT and Administration that they wish to drop a class or workshop; not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal from courses or cancellation of tuition or fees. If you must drop a class or workshop after the deadline, no refunds will be given. 

There is no deferred, reduced or pro-rated tuition. Membership is non-refundable. There are no exceptions to the Evanston Art Center refund policy.

*The first session is defined as the first day a class or workshop meets (not the first class or workshop attended).  

**To avoid paying the processing fee, students may elect to receive a full tuition credit for classes or workshops dropped seven days or more before the first session. Tuition credit will expire one year from the date the class or workshop is dropped and must be used in full for EAC class and/or workshop tuition. After the credit is redeemed, no further refund options will be available. 

Tuition credits are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Credits may be transferred to another individual only with written notice.
