What you'll learn in this photography class:

The History of Visual Narrative, Part 2: The Photographic Revolution

Enhance your understanding of the history of photography and narrative to inform and deepen your own work. In this lecture/discussion class, we’ll survey visual storytelling from the beginnings of photography to today — from early magic lantern slides, to Stefan Lorant photo essays and the slideshows of Jacob Riis and Nan Goldin, to contemporary Virtual Reality.

Topics include innovations in technology, aesthetics, and imagery and how they have been used to bring stories to the world. Each session begins with a lecture, followed by discussion with students analyzing the meaning and method of photographic storytelling techniques and aesthetics through history. Students will have the option of creating a written essay, visual portfolio, or video essay exploring the topics presented during the course.

Students will receive instructions on how to prepare for class (i.e. upload images, etc.) a few days before the first session.
