Discover the Best First Aid Classes Online

First aid is the emergency attention given to an illness or injury immediately after it occurs, often at the location at which it occurred. It’s usually considered a one-time response with the intention of preserving life and stabilizing the situation before medical care. Some examples of first aid include CPR, cleanFiring minor cuts and scrapes, applying bandages, creating a tourniquet, treating burns, and offering fluids for heat stress. While some medical professionals, such as Paramedics, are required to know first aid, it’s also a useful skill for any layperson to acquire.

Why You Should Learn First Aid Online

Learning first aid can be a significant confidence booster in emergencies, and even in everyday situations. One can never know exactly when an illness or injury will emerge, so it’s helpful to have first aid knowledge and supplies on hand at all times. In addition, learning first aid can help you break into several healthcare professions, such as becoming a Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician. Even outside of the healthcare world, some jobs require first aid training, such as being a lifeguard or firefighter. Regardless of whether one is searching for a job or simply trying to attain skills that may be relevant in their personal lives, first aid is a useful set of tools to have on hand.

Learning first aid online has several advantages. First of all, online courses eliminate the need for a physical presence at the classes—freeing up your commute time and adding flexibility into your schedule. You’ll be able to access courses even if you live in a more remote area that might not have access to various in-person classes. Some classes may also give you the opportunity to record the course, meaning that you’ll be able to review materials long after the class is actually over. Finally, with an online course, you don’t have to limit the connections that you’re making to a single geographical area. You can meet other people interested in healthcare from around the country, even the world.

Virtual First Aid Classes

Online first aid classes offer advantages and disadvantages. Online classes offer flexibility, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness. With an online first aid course, you can learn from anywhere. However, online classes also offer limited hands-on experience. While you can follow along with an instructor at home, it won’t be the same as getting real-time feedback from your peers and teachers. You’ll also have to supply your own materials and equipment, such as a first aid kit or a doll/dummy to practice on. Finally, it may be difficult to find a virtual first aid course that suits your needs.

One class that will likely be interesting to anyone invested in learning more about first aid is the Infant Safety and CPR webinar hosted by Birth Day Presence. In this webinar, participants will learn about all infant safety topics, from car seat safety to choking hazard and response. This class is a blend of lecture and demonstration, and students are welcome to follow along with a doll, pillow, or their own CPR dummy. Birth Day Presence is a premier child education and doula provider, and hosts both webinars and in-person classes on childbirth and child safety.

People with interest in first aid may also be curious about expanding their knowledge of medicine. The Medical Terminology I course equips students to learn the vocabulary of the body, from organ systems to diseases. This is a great course for those pursuing a career in medicine, or those who are simply interested in expanding their knowledge of the medical field. This course is offered online by the Los Angeles City College.

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice offers an Emergency Medical Technician course for those who are interested in pursuing a career in emergency medicine. This course may also be appealing to those who want an in-depth look into first aid and emergency response. Students will learn how to assess a patient’s condition, how to apply emergency care, and when, if necessary, to initiate a medical transport. The John Jay College of Criminal Justice also offers a Emergency Medical Technician - Refresher course for those who have already completed the Emergency Medical Technician program and want to brush up on their skills.

Another possible course for people interested in first aid is the Pharmacy Technician Training Program. This is specifically relevant for those interested in a career in medicine, of which learning first aid can be the first step. Participants can expect to become a licensed pharmacy technician in approximately 7 months. Topics include pharmacology for technicians, pharmacy law, compounding, quality assurance, and safety. The program includes an externship with hands-on training.

Finally, some people interested in first aid may also be curious about non-Western forms of medicine. For these people, the New York Botanical Garden has a course on Herbal Honeys. In this course, students will be assigned a materials list that they can then source themselves. They will then be led through the process of creating medicinal herbal honeys for sore throats, skin wounds, and infection. While herbal honeys are not a replacement for medical care, this course may be a fruitful adventure for those interested in supplementing their knowledge of biology and non-Western medicine.

Online vs. In-Person First Aid Classes

Online and in-person first aid courses each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Online courses offer the flexibility of learning at your own pace and convenience. They allow you to access materials and instruction from anywhere with an internet connection. They often provide interactive modules, videos, and quizzes to enhance learning.

However, online courses may lack the hands-on practice and immediate feedback that in-person courses offer. In contrast, in-person courses provide hands-on training, allowing participants to practice skills under the guidance of instructors. They also more easily offer the opportunity for real-time interaction. However, in-person courses do require scheduling and travel considerations that online courses do not. Ultimately, the choice between online and in-person first aid courses depends on individual preferences, learning styles and availability.

Can I Learn First Aid for Free Online?

Yes, you can learn first aid for free online through various resources such as the American Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, National CPR Foundation, and first aid for Free. These organizations offer comprehensive online courses covering topics like CPR, choking, bleeding control, and more. While these resources provide valuable knowledge, it’s important to supplement online learning with hands-on practice in order to master first aid techniques most effectively.
