Featuring Japanese-inspired works by artists from all over the world, RESOBOX is a Japanese cultural center dedicated to sharing and celebrating Japanese influence in the arts. Our workshops, cafe, gallery and event space allow us to celebrate Japanese culture in many ways.

RESOBOX is the name created from a mashup of the words Resonate and Box. This Resonating Box envisions a space where artists can meet and collaborate to create new and innovative arts. The space within this Box Resonates, too, shaking up everything inside.

The concept of RESOBOX was originally created in August 2009 as a personal art project by Fumio Tashiro – New York composer, bassist and videographer.

We offer classes in Japanese-inspired dance, ink painting, cosplay and prop-making, martial arts and more. With drawing and dance classes just for kids and classes in Karate, Iaido and Jodo, we have something for everyone.

Visitors can enjoy art inspired by Japanese culture in our gallery. Featuring artists from near and far, we display new artwork monthly. We are open to artists of any age, race or nationality, provided that they somehow incorporate Japanese ideas, culture or philosophy into their work through the creation of something that didn’t exist before.

RESOBOX is a place where people who are conversant with, dedicated to, and influenced by Japanese arts can gather to create innovative arts through the collaborative process and disseminate them to the world. Join us!

Accessibility: The Long Island City location is fully wheelchair accessible.

I found the content very useful. Also we were given very nice bonsai trees to work on and take home. Because 7 people were expected, and only 3. came, the instructor waited 15 minutes for late-comers, non of whom arrived. If any of those canceled, you should have notified the instructor, so he wouldn’t have waited so long to start. Also, not fair to him, since he had to drag 4 extra, trees and equipment which he then had to take back with him. This was the first Course Horse class I’ve attended…hope you do better with the attendance issue next time.

A fun, summer activity. The length and content of the class was perfect, the instructor was very nice. I tried to call to verify the address and class before heading downtown but the number in the confirmation was not working. Better communication avenues or even a text reminder a day before the class would’ve been helpful too.

It was awesome… The instructor gave everyone the personal attention we needed, he was patient, attentive and answered questions thoughtfully and thoroughly . He was very knowledgeable on the topic. He encouraged feedback and he gave a contact for follow up should we have further questions or concerns.

I gifted myself the Sumi-e class for my birthday week and I wasn't disappointed! The instructor greeted us with subdued music in an open classroom in the East Village and then proceeded to list her qualifications as a Sumi-e instructor, which were impressive. It was a small group which was just perfect and, to my delight, the subject was a beautiful Japanese bird and plumb blossom branch just in time for my spring birthday! I can't draw or paint to save my life but soon I was mimicking the instructor's master strokes and creating a work of art that I am so very proud of! I even framed it at the request of my friends and family who were all so impressed with my "first attempt" at this ancient art form. In short, I recommend this course highly, the instructor highly, and also highly recommend you put aside your inhibitions and just let yourself CREATE! I plan on taking more of these informative and restorative classes.

I enjoyed learning this technique. It was harder than I thought. I’d have liked to know in advance which picture was being taught as I’d have preferred an alternate one.
