This comprehensive wood carving class welcomes both beginners and experienced sculptors interested in exploring direct carving techniques. Through hands-on training in the fundamentals of wood carving, you will learn to carve directly into the wood, letting its natural properties guide and influence your creative decisions rather than working from preconceived drawings or imposed designs.
Direct carving represents a deeply creative and liberating approach to sculpture. During this process, a meaningful relationship develops between artist and material, one where the artist attentively listens to the wood and responds with intention, skill, and passion. This collaborative dialogue between artist and wood produces unique sculptures that reflect each creator's individual vision and artistic voice.
Because carved material cannot be replaced once removed, many sculptors hesitate to embrace this technique. However, the subtractive nature of carving offers tremendous freedom and serves as powerful training in courage and flexibility. This class emphasizes creating in an atmosphere of safety and encouragement, helping students express themselves without fear of mistakes or missteps.
You may work on any project you envision, whether figurative, abstract, or anything in between.
