What you'll learn in this mixed media class:

Boundaries between mediums and disciplines have become less distinct and more permeable as image makers increasingly turn to sculpture and installation as vehicles for self-expression, and those making three-dimensional work incorporate imagery. This class is a forum for experimentation with contemporary art methods of photography, mixed media sculpture, and installation. The focus will be on the pragmatic aspects of creating interdisciplinary work such as drafting proposals, making schedules, prioritizing tasks, selecting materials, and problem solving for site-specific locations, as well as employing a fluid workflow between two and three dimensions. For those who choose to participate there is an exhibition opportunity at the end of the course.

 Course Objectives:

  • Gaining familiarity with contemporary artists working across disciplines and the variety of work being produced.
  • Sourcing opportunities.
  • Creating a proposal for a project inclusive of materials, budgets, and time schedules.
  • Utilizing research tactics of a practical nature; this might include investigating types of adhesives, differences between clay types and project-appropriate choices, how to build structures that are well-crafted and substantial, installing speakers or lights, etc.
  • Completion of at least one project. Students may work individually or in collaboration. They may orient their project to exhibit with the group at the end of the course, or simply work toward personal goals.

The class will meet one evening a week for 8 weeks and will use an online classroom as our hub between class meetings. During this time, we will take a project from proposal through execution. Interdisciplinary projects require meticulous planning, and this class is designed to help with that. The advantage of doing this in a group is that we can tap into the skill sets of others, gaining knowledge from others in the class who will bring to it their own fields of expertise.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.
