Using narrative as a central theme, students will explore the versatility & potential of borosilicate glass through space, form, & texture
Sculpting in glass is so much more than creating shiny objects that occupy three dimensions, it is a unique amalgamation of technical skill, intuition, and a way to bring visual form to our voices. Using narrative as a central theme, students will explore the versatility and potential of borosilicate glass through space, form, texture, and color. And develop creative intelligence while focusing on the technical aspects of hollow and solid sculpting.
In the flame shop students will learn through practice in an exploration of dimension in both space and content by using additive, assemblage, modeling and carving methods. They will produce a story, create visual vocabulary and build narrative works of art with their sculptural dialect.
Freedom of expression and creative instinct will be important components of the class. New ideas and ways of working will be encouraged as students strive for technical excellence. Let your voice be heard with narrative sculpture in glass.
What to Expect: The workshop will rely heavily on practice time. Practice is essential to proficiency. I will give group demos at least twice a session at specified times for the first 4 sessions, as well as individualized demos for each student throughout the day. The last day of the class I will concentrate on helping students finish projects. We will have several discussions about our ideas and how to execute them. All students will develop their own original ideas for projects. If you are unsure of what to do, we will come up with a plan together.
Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the flat shop, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 5-8pm.
Eligibility: No experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight so the students may have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work from the final day of class.
