What you'll learn in this woodworking class:

In this one day class we will explore the many variations of the most fundamental woodworking joint, the mortise and tenon! Such variations will be: blind, through, wedged, pinned, tusked and the fox. The day will be filled with demonstrations, discussion of proportions along with applications and of course a lot of hands on practice! The practice time will focus on the through mortise and tenon. You will take away a firm grasp of this most central joint.

Prerequisites needed in this class:

Required: 

  • Sharpening with Japanese Waterstone Or some sharpening experience. You can also rent a sharp chisel from Mokuchi.

Recommended: 

  • Japanese Block Plane and Chisel or Japanese Finish Planing
  • Japanese Saws: Get a Grip

Are materials provided and included in cost of the class? No.

A payment of $20 is required as materials fee at time of class.

Materials you will need to bring to class:

  • 210mm ryoba saw
  • 12mm(1/2″) chisel
  • hammer, square, pencil, eraser.

Optional:

  • Dozuki saw
  • 12mm pairing chisel
  • Marking gauge
  • A slightly wider chisel is also handy say 18, 21 or 24mm
  • Sashigane (Japanese square)

Students can purchase tools and materials at the school as Mokuchi is a Japanese tool retailer and can provide guidance on obtaining tools and a student discount.

No refunds or credit available for cancellations less than 10 business days before class.
