Bluegrass Fiddle Solo Intensive

Bill Monroe once characterized bluegrass music as “Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin’.” While hinting at the international range of the music’s roots and influences, he was also highlighting the distinctive role that the fiddle plays in defining the genre. 

This class will focus on those moments when the bluegrass fiddler takes the spotlight and plays a solo. Equal parts style, technique and showmanship, it’s a spontaneous combination of skill and creativity that can be a satisfying, even exhilarating experience for both performer and listener.

Through a combination of technical exercises, careful listening, imitation and improvisation we will develop the tools and confidence necessary to produce a great solo.

Prerequisite: This class is intended for advanced students with a few years of experience at playing fiddle or violin. The ability to read music will be a big advantage though not strictly necessary.
