Description
Class Level: All levels
Age Requirements: 18 and older
Average Class Size: 20
Teacher: Ashley Maynor

What you'll learn in this communications course:

In this intensive two-part workshop, you'lll get a head-to-toes overview for how to get started with a podcast of your own. No previous podcasting or media experience is expected or required. Simply bring your show ideas and a willingness to learn!

CURRICULUM PLAN
This workshop's format is a combination of information-sharing, conversation, hands-on activities, and case studies. Each participant will gain access to a bibliography of recommended books, equipment, resources, and, of course, podcasts for further listening and learning!

In Part One, we’ll cover story planning and project goals, including a self-assessment of your dream podcast and inventory of your current resources. Next, we’ll explore what goes into making a podcast by looking at the lifecycle of a single episode and how a show develops over time. You’ll receive handouts, including links to different recommended production tool kits, and you’ll have a short “homework” assignment to complete ahead of the second class.

In Part Two, we’ll look at what goes into editing a podcast, including the different apps and programs you can use. Following a short demo of different platforms, we’ll talk about creating community around your show, through audience-building, distribution, and monetization. Finally, students will share the results of their “homework” assignment and receive project-specific advice.

What You Will Learn:
– Learn about the different styles of podcasting, including shows you should be listening to!
– Learn audio storytelling tips and find inspiration for podcast format and content.
– Discover tools and techniques for getting started with both low and “no-budget” DIY podcasting, including audio production equipment (microphones, recorders, apps, etc.) and editing software.
– Examine ways to market, distribute, and monetize your podcast.

I would have preferred a bit more structure. The display screen was also broken, so it was difficult to follow along on the small computer screen.
