Don Quixote is in several senses one of our essential books.
First, as a model for what novels could do: from Dickens to Dostoevsky, from Flaubert to García Márquez, novelists have acknowledged their debt to Don Quixote. Second, as a revolutionary work that, during the wave of expulsions of Jews and Arabs from the Iberian Peninsula, has the courage to redeem the denied cultures of Spain and stand against the political lies of the time. Third, as a lesson of humanity, teaching us the essential function of justice in society and the redeeming quality of empathy. And fourth (but not least) it is one of the most entertaining stories ever told.
During the six classes of this course, we look at these different aspects of Don Quixote—literary, political, psychological and humorous—and discuss the relevance of the book for us today.
